Buying Your Dream Car:
Our Simple 4-Step Import Process
Buying an imported car shouldn’t feel like a math exam. At Alliance Premier Auto Group, we handle the heavy lifting so you can focus on the drive. Here is how we get your car from the world to your doorstep in Kenya.
1. Pick Your Ride (The Rules)
To keep our roads safe and green, Kenya has a few simple “must-haves” for every import:
- The 8-Year Rule: For 2026, your car must have been manufactured in 2019 or later.
- Right-Hand Drive: We only import Right-Hand Drive (RHD) vehicles to match Kenyan road standards.
- The “Clean Bill of Health”: Every car we source undergoes a mandatory inspection by QISJ or EAA before it even touches a ship. You’ll receive a Certificate of Roadworthiness as proof.
2. Understanding The Price (No Hidden Surprises)
The price you see on a foreign website isn’t the final price in Kenya. We provide a Total Landed Cost, which includes:
- CIF (Cost, Insurance, & Freight): The price of the car plus the cost to ship it to Mombasa.
- KRA Taxes (The Big Ones): Kenya Revenue Authority taxes cars based on their “Current Retail Selling Price” (CRSP). This means they look at what the car costs brand new today and apply for a discount based on its age.
- Import Duty: 35%
- Excise Duty: 20% – 35% (depending on engine size)
- VAT: 16%
- Bonus: Electric Vehicles (EVs) enjoy a much lower tax rate—ask us how to save!
3. The Paperwork (We Do This For You)
You only need to provide two things:
- Your KRA PIN Certificate
- A Copy of your ID/Passport
We handle the rest: the Bill of Lading, the Commercial Invoice, and the Import Declaration Form (IDF).
4. What Will You Still Have To Pay
While you are exempt from Import Duty, VAT, and Excise Duty, there are a few small mandatory fees:
- Railway Development Levy (RDL): 2% of the car’s value.
- Port & Clearing Fees: Standard charges for handling and storage at the Mombasa port.
